Can I Call Some Repair Guy To Insulate A Wall Connecting My Garage To An Upstairs Room?

2009 July 27

my room is unusually hot, even has a AC vent, and so I think it is because the wall is not insulated (the room is upstairs and borders with the garage) . . . i have been told to put a “2 inch foam board ” or somthing, but I really have no idea how to insulate it myself. . . . . what kind of repair guy would do it? and for what cost?

Try a handyman service. It’s hard to predict the cost–you’ll need insulation, drywall, mud, and nails. I would do a 16′ x 8′ wall for $200. Prices vary in different parts of the country.

A carpenter or handyman could do the job, provided they have the know how.
Get written estimates stating what he proposes to do:
    - remove existing covering?
    - insulate with ??? (foam board or batting with good R value, etc)
    - installing new drywall or paneling
    - mudding, taping and sanding the drywall (at the very least 3 times)
    - hauling the debris, unless you have the ways and means to dispose of it properly.
    - how long will the job take?
If he’s doing all the work be sure the bid is for labor AND materials.
Another thing you might consider is whether or not you want him to paint the room if you have the drywalling done.
If you do, get that on the bid as well.
Anything you can do yourself will save you money overall.
Don’t hesitate to get more than one estimate and ask for references. Check with the BBB for complaints, too.
    Wishing you comfort!
