Does it cost a lot to refinish original hardwood floors? About 960 square feet total.

Not if you do it yourself. My mom did hers and it didn’t cost her much, she did it herself. You can rent the sanders you need,it cost my mom less than 50 to do that,I’m not sure if it will be more or less in your area.Materials you will need:floor sander, edge sander, orbital sander, hand scraper, paint pad, hammer, nail set, dust mask, sandpaper, chisel, pull bar, pliers, wide masking tape, polyurethane varnish.1.start by removing shoe molding and any obstructions from the floor area.2.use wide masking tape to protect the baseboards.3.locate any protruding nails and countersink to about 1/4″ below the floor surface.you do this by using another nail and hammer, put the nail on top of the nail you want to sink and hammer it down.4.prepare the drum sander by installing heavy grit sandpaper.5.position the drum sander in the center of the room, raise the sanding drum, turn the machine on and slowly lower onto the floor as you move.6.For heavy damage the first pass should be diagonal accross the grain, then the second pass should be along the grain.7.keep the sander moving constantly, stopping 1″ from the wall.repeat this method as you proceed, overlapping each path by 1/4″ as you go.8.use an edge sander around the borders and a hand scraper to get to hard-to-reach areas.9.after sanding, vacuum the entire area and then you are ready to seal the floor.10.use a combination of water-based polyurethane and water, mix thoroughly.11.apply the polyurethane with a paint pad, allow to dry.12.apply the first full strength coat, brushing with the grain, continue until you cover the entire area.13.allow to dry and repeat the process for all additional coats.

Probably around $2000-2500 if you have them done professionally. You can rent the sander and do it yourself for alot less if you are into DIY. Lowes rents the sanders that use the stick on pads, and has everything you would need! You rent it and pick it up one day, and you dont have to bring it back until they close the following day! I would say about $500-900 if you do it yourself, maybe less! Im 28 and a female and plan on doing it myself in our home, we have about the same square footage of the original hardwood also. I like to do things myself because you appreciate it more!
